If you are an immigrant living in the United States, first of all, welcome!
YOU ARE WELCOME TO APPLY FOR ANY OF OUR SERVICES
If you are undocumented, your legal status will not disqualify you for our services if you are low-income and have a legal issue we handle. Please see our “Get Help” page for information on what matters we handle and how to apply for our services. Your status as an immigrant will not prevent you from being otherwise eligible for our services.
CONFIDENTIALITY
As for any of our applicants or clients regardless of citizenship status, information about you that you share with us is strictly confidential. We do not share any information about people who apply for our services or those who are our clients. Our ethical obligation as attorneys forbids us from disclosing any information that you provide to us.
AREAS OF IMMIGRATION LAW WE CANNOT HANDLE:
With our small staff, we are not able to handle any immigration matters related to employment, asylum, refugee, deportation defense or family reunification.
AREAS OF IMMIGRATION LAW WE CAN HANDLE:
However, we can help residents of our seventeen-county service region with two specific immigration issues:
- U Visas. We assist victims of extreme violence apply for a U Visa, which offers a potential path to citizenship if the victim cooperates with law enforcement by reporting the crime and remaining available to testify against the perpetrator. To find out more about the U Visa, please go to https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/victims-of-criminal-activity-u-nonimmigrant-status .
- VAWA Self Petitions. We assist victims of violence whose perpetrator is their U. S. citizen spouse. To find out more about the VAWA Self-Petition, please go to https://www.uscis.gov/green-card-eligibility/green-card-for-vawa-self-petitioner.
To find out if you are eligible for our assistance with either of those two kinds of immigration relief, please call our Fredericksburg office at 540-371-1105, Ext. 119.
OTHER RESOURCES FOR IMMIGRANTS
There are many other organizations which are available to assist immigrants with questions about their legal status in the United States. Here is a partial list of those organizations. Please look at their websites and contact them if you are looking for assistance that we are not able to provide (such as asylum, refugee, deportation defense, family reunification, employment authorization).
For help with emergency immigration issues, there is an excellent tool kit developed by Legal Aid Justice Center’s advocates. You can find it here: https://www.justice4all.org/rapid-response-toolkit/
